Maggie Bjorklund is a visual artist with a concentration in painting. She lives and works in her hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She earned a BA in Art from DePaul University in 2021. Her work has been shown nationally, including in Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Columbus. In addition to her studio practice, Maggie works as a studio assistant and runs an event floral design business.

In my practice, I paint to visualize the sacredness of things. Working with oil paint on canvas, panel, and paper, I make paintings and monotypes of imagined landscapes. My process is driven by the moments that emerge on the surface as I manipulate the paint. Emphasizing movement and subtlety, I use thin layers of paint and visible, sweeping brush strokes that merge and overlap on the surface. These marks, often incidental, direct the work, establishing forms as it progresses. The paintings interpolate angelic qualities in ephemeral or earthly things, invoking meaning in small details. Things like decay, growth, and pain are embodied in textures and colors of nature, like food, flesh, plants, or bugs. Informed by spirit, nature, and my own chronically ill body, the paintings consider where and how sacredness can be seen, felt, and shared.
